Heero is not Toast [& Other Gundam Wing Facts]

The last kind of rant I will ever post is one trying to prove or disprove a certain relationship in Gundam Wing. Why?
BECAUSE NO RELATIONSHIP ON GUNDAM WING CAN BE PROVEN!

That's the lesson for today, kiddos. That's the point of this rant. I am sick of yaoi and non-yaoi fans throwing bricks at each other, whining about how:

"WELL RELENA AND HEERO DANCED! AND HE ALWAYS THINKS OF HER! AND HE SMILES AT HER ONCE! AND SHE CATCHES HIM IN ENDLESS WALTZ! EVEN DUO SAYS THEY ARE IN LOVE!"

"NO! THERE'S OFFICIAL ART OF DUO AND HEERO HOLDING EACH OTHER POSSESSIVELY! AND DUO AND HEERO ARE ALWAYS PAIRED UP AND WORKING TOGETHER! AND ONE TIME DUO SAYS HIS NAME LUSTFULLY!"

"THERE IS A 95% CHANCE THAT HEERO AND RELENA GO TOGETHER IN THE END! IT'S TRUE, I STAYED UP ALL NIGHT AND CALCULATED IT!"

"YOU CAN'T DO THAT! ANYWAY, THE GUY WHO CREATED GUNDAM WING SAID HEERO AND RELENA ARE NOT MEANT TO BE A COUPLE!"

Well, folks, I could drag that out, but I won't. I'm sure it's a scene many of you have witnessed or participated in before. Now, let's get to the point.

That means, it was made for boys. Now, a shoujo anime - Fushigi Yugi, Rayearth, Kodoma no Omocha - those are mainly for girls. Difference? Shounen anime has no fashion sense, lots of fighting, lots of blood, lots of cursing, and a really lame love story, if there is one at all. Shoujo anime normally CENTERS on the love plot - which is normally a good one. However, sometimes they turn out to be bad soap operas.

Gundam Wing, I say again, is shounen. The writers figure the watchers are more concerned with Gundams killing each other, than with characters falling in love. No one kisses in Gundam Wing, only once does someone mention love [Noin admits to loving Zechs in episode 15, when telling Relena Zechs is her brother], and any hugging is done when one of the two is unconscious, out of it, or not really paying attention. The fact is, Gundam Wing is NOT a show about love. The creators probably got a shock when they attracted a HUGE female audience. Why do the females flock to it?

Five very sexy, young, and attractive main characters. This is something the other Gundam series were simply lacking. [Go take a look at Amuro Ray - GEEZ!]

Not only are there five bishounen as main characters, but they are confused, lost, suicidal, adorable, bouncy, sweet, and kind. Pretty much exactly what most women want in a guy... minus the suicidal part, of course.

Some fans, who make my blood boil just to think about, claim the boys are their own boyfriends, husbands, etc. I guess they are a category of their own - Morons. I will not even talk about those people who scream "DUO IS MY BOYFRIEND! HE'S NOT HEERO'S /or/ HILDE'S! HE'S MINE! HE PROPOSED TO ME LAST NIGHT!". They are just sad, sad, sad people. And if you've never encountered one, yes, they really do hate all fans of Gundam Wing who aren't followers of the DuoXThem or HeeroXThem or whatever pairing. That's all I will say on this topic, because it confuses and annoys me to no end. The boys aren't real, hon. If you need help getting a boyfriend, go see a dating counselor.

The rest of the fans either don't care who loves who [this section is mainly males. i wish i was like them sometimes.], or fit into one of two categories.

So, which are you? Because, of course, the RULE says, all Yaoi fans must HATE all Non-yaoi pairings, and vice versa.

Sadly, this is normally how it goes. A few months before Otakon, 2001, I was the kind of Yaoi fangirl who despised and hated most non-yaoi pairings and their fans. ESPECIALLY 1xR. Damn, 1xR was BAD. It made me so upset to think Heero might go with Relena. I'd cry. I insulted close friends of mine and never wanted to speak to them again when they told me they'd decided 1xR was cool. I recall one conversation:

Friend: Sorry...
Yamato: That's disgusting. They are DISGUSTING. -_-.
Friend: Thanks for kicking my beliefs. ._.

I didn't care. I just hated the pairing. Was it because it was a threat to 1x2, my beloved couple? Was it because at the time I hated Relena with a passion [the Relena Torture Game came about in this time period]? Anyone who knew me was aware of my intense passion against the couple. However, it was odd. I completely understood, supported, even wrote about the 2xH pairing. I always did like Hilde. So, I figured it was just that I hated Relena.

At Otakon, I was pleased to see only one Relena cosplayer. And she was NOT with a Heero. In fact, most people thought I was cosplaying Miss Peacecraft - although I was Dorothy, my face and hair more closely resemble Relena's, and the eyebrows I drew on were a joke. They just made me look manly. I joke that I can see why people thought I was Relena. Even Hikaru Midorikawa thought I was Relena. And at the time that I spoke to him, the LAST thing I wanted to hear out of Heero's voice actor's mouth was - "Relena?!" [anyone with the tape of his panel can see where he points, calls out Relena, and someone screams NO!, there is a big awkward pause where he apologizes, then the girl resumes to ask him to Omae O Korosu the entire room. That was me. *sigh*].

Well, I go into the dealer's room on a search for Duo stuff, as always. I find some really nifty art books. One of them - the best one I found - was, to put it simply, littered with 1xR. My blood ran cold as my eyes lay upon a picture of Heero and Relena.

I ended up buying that art book, my mind confused, crying, screaming. This book was like a gold mine for any 1xR fan. Why was I buying it? Why would I, a huge yaoi fangirl, buy this book, full of non-yaoi goodness? Was I losing my mind? Was I - shinigami forbid - starting to accept 1xR?

In line for Hikaru's signature, I sat with a group of people. They were all yaoi fans. They included me, a Duo cosplayer, the webmistress of 1x2x1.org, and some others. We just sat there and had a grand ol' time discussing yaoi. I was uneasy. I was sitting here amongst yaoi fans, yet I felt sick to my stomach? WHY? At one point I got up and shoved ahead in line to glomp a cool looking Trowa and Wing Zero Custom cosplayer. Some girls stopped me to chat about H.I.N.T. for a moment. I told them I was bringing all my plushies to the next con...maybe Heero and Duo could sit on my shoulder having fun. They squealed and asked who'd be on top. I paused, then grinned. "Duo seme." They squealed and I moved back into line. I felt good the rest of the day.

The rest of the con I was surrounded by my yaoi fangirl horde. The book was still in my backpack, though. Oddly enough, my friend whose "beliefs I had kicked" who I mentioned earlier, was there. She was really sweet and nice. But...a 1xR fan.

I got home from Otakon with the realization swimming in my head... you can't be a fan of Gundam Wing and totally ignore the non-yaoi pairings. They are there... proof and all. Right along with the yaoi proof. Ever since, I've been slowly growing to accept it, until now, I sit here writing this rant, with fanfictions in the working where 1+R is littering them. Am I becoming a 1xR fangirl?

Even more amusing are entire sites dedicated to "proof", and "why 1xR and/or 1x2 are real!"

I'm sorry, people. But they aren't real. Neither of them is official. Neither of them ever will be. There is no solid proof in anime, manga, or official art, that anyone in the show gets married, has children, goes to bed with each other every night and gets it on.

There are what I like to call, little hints. You can find little hints for any pairing if you look hard enough. Watch as I act out a typical yaoi and non-yaoi proof battle. Those of you with "proof", watch just how pointless it is. I'm going to use the 1xR VRS 1x2 battle, as I have been, as it is the largest battle in all of GW fandom.

Well, no, actually, I can't see. It's not obvious. now, obviously, there are many more pictures and scenes "proving" not only these pairings, but pairings such as 3x4, 3xC, 4xD, 5x13, so on. There's proof in the anime, manga, and artbooks about all these pairings. Yaoi fans claim that they don't care if Heero kisses Relena, because the manga isn't real, then they claim it's sooo cute when Heero cuddles Duo in Ground Zero. Everyone hits each other with pictures, but I bet there's an almost equal amount of pictures "proving" 1xR as there is "proving" 1x2.

What's the point? What was the point of that big gallery up there? The point is, there is no point. You cannot PROVE anything. Not yaoi, not non-yaoi. You can show why it MIGHT WORK OUT, but not why IT DOES WORK OUT. Because the fact is, it doesn't work out. Only in the minds of the fans do Duo and Heero share an apartment while Quatre and Trowa snuggle in their own, sipping hot chocolate, or Heero and Relena happily cut their wedding cake while Quatre and Dorothy have another one of those cute lover's quarrels.

And remember - just because they HUG or SAVE EACH OTHER or ARE ALWAYS WORKING TOGETHER or PLAY MUSIC MUSIC TOGETHER or something...whoever said that equals true love? These people are KIDS! Fifteen! Sixteen! How many fifteen and sixteen year olds out there have found their mate for the rest of their life? How many of you are getting married next week to the person you have a crush on?

And of course [and this is something I DO understand, with my [sort of] best friends being a boy and a girl], since when does a HUG or a CUDDLE or a HELPING HAND mean TRUE LOVE?! Even if Relena and Heero kiss in Blind Target, there is a difference between YOUNG TEENAGERS WHO ARE INFATUATED WITH EACH OTHER and ADULTS WHO ARE IN LOVE! So what if Relena catches Heero when he falls! Wouldn't you do that for a friend?! So, let me get this straight, if someone you cared for was falling down, fainted, you would let them fall UNLESS they were your true lover?! Huh?!

Wait until these people are older, my friends. Wait until they've been going out for two years and are out of college. That's when it gets real. And do we ever get this in Gundam Wing?

IV] Yamato, why are you telling me this? I'm not going to give up all my beliefs about Gundam Wing just because none of them are official.

All I want is for the fighting to stop. It tears the GW community apart. We would be so much bigger, so much better, so much more respected, if we only got along. The Yaoi/Non-Yaoi rift is immature, pointless, and stupid.

Here are the morals of the story, and the reasons why H.I.N.T. and heerosferret.com attract huge crowds from both Yaoi and Non-Yaoi fandoms.

1. Don't try to prove your pairing! It will just make people mad, and trust me, even if you have hard, solid proof that someone kissed or cuddled in a manga, there will almost always be something to disprove it. The people who make Gundam Wing aren't all Yaoi fans, and they aren't all Non-Yaoi fans. That's why so much of the artwork and story line is split in itself - you can find hints for anything in there. It's a one in a million chance you're going to convert a non-yaoi fan to a yaoi fan just because you have a picture of Heero groping Duo. It will just frustrate everyone. Just accept the pairings, and live to love your own. You don't have to visit websites or read fanfiction of a pairing you don't like, unless you are one of those angels who can read any pairing and love it. Just accept.

2. NEVER flat out insult someone else for not liking the same pairing as you. It's just rude, no matter what.

3. Your ideal goal should be this: to either learn to live with and love all of GW fandom, or at least accept them all. Don't let a pairing you don't like ruin your life. All it will cause is pain. You can't delete scenes from manga, art, or the show. You just need to live with them. And that's the hardest thing of all for some people to accept.
